The Quality Of Nursing Care

Every profession requires an extraordinary level of knowledge, skills and personal characteristics. If the correspondence between the plaintiffs and their individual characteristics for profession is not adequately addressed their work will be hampered compatibility [1].

The tests are currently used for the selection of people to different professions. In Iran, university entrance, tests are administered annually to students to evaluate the adequacy of intake in the different programs and professions. The administration of such tests is apparently based on a series of hypotheses. These assumptions are:

- Students of the test results indicate their suitability for the program or profession.

- Candidates with higher test score is more appropriate to sensitive and important positions.

- The choice of a profession or a program is the result of the applicant informed selection.

- Applicants carefully consider your interests, skills and characteristics for selecting an appropriate program or profession.

- Since the participation in trials and the choice of the program is voluntary, it is assumed that applicants will be highly motivated and provide high quality services, once they enter their profession.

Reports, unfortunately, indicate that this is not always the case. Many nursing students are not well motivated, nurses tend to lose interest in his early work, despite an increase in the number of nurses with bachelor’s degrees and graduate degrees, the quality of nursing care seems to have decreased rather to improve [2, 3]. Alikhani (2000) reported that the problem seems to be caused by factors such as poor selection criteria, methods of teaching, course content and evaluation methods [4]. The purpose of administering the test to select the best candidates for a program or profession. This can be achieved when those who have been selected characteristics compatible with the characteristics of their profession [5].

A review of procedures for the admission of nursing students in different countries shows that these issues have been largely ignored. Vidmar Dornik and Slovenia reported that only a high school diploma is required for admission to nursing schools [6]. Similarly, Ehrenfeld et al. As well as the National League for Nursing American contends that admission to nursing schools in the United States is based on the testes similar to those of other programs, such as aptitude tests or teacher made achievement tests [3, 7]. Similarly, in Iran, the entrance exams to college far only theoretical knowledge and aptitude of applicants and that requirements of the nursing profession are much broader and different. For this reason, researchers have highlighted in recent years, successful applicants for nursing must have the psychological and personal characteristics as well as their knowledge and skills. To account for this, personality tests have also been recommended to supplement the teaching aptitude tests [7 to 10].

In their investigations of the various professions and conditions of employment, the Netherlands has identified personality characteristics appropriate for the nursing profession. In his view, nursing requires social personality, although some degree of artistic exploration and personality types may also be desirable [1].

Regarding the importance of proper selection criteria for the nursing profession, this study was to determine first-year nursing student and personality characteristics to investigate the compatibility of such characteristics with the study and practice of nursing. It is expected that the study results to help promote nursing services and increase job satisfaction in the profession.
